Glasgow Cosmic's first head coach is a two-time World Cup winner with 103 Test caps and one of the most feared openers cricket has produced. Matthew Hayden is joining the club not just as coach, but as a co-owner, and he'll be building the squad from the ground up for the ETPL's inaugural season this August.
Who is Matthew Hayden
Hayden made his name as an Australian opener who didn't just survive fast bowling, he attacked it. Across 103 Tests and 161 ODIs he scored over 15,000 international runs, won two Cricket World Cups, and was the leading run-scorer at the 2007 World Cup with 659 runs. In the IPL, he played for Chennai Super Kings from 2008 to 2010, top-scored the tournament in 2009, and won the title in his final season there.
Since retiring from playing in 2012, Hayden has built a serious coaching résumé: batting consultant with Pakistan's national side, and, as of March 2026, batting coach for Gujarat Titans, one of the IPL's most competitive franchises. Why Glasgow Cosmic
The European T20 Premier League kicks off its first-ever season from 26 August to 20 September 2026, with six franchises across Scotland, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Glasgow Cosmic is Scotland's entry, and unlike Hayden's other coaching stops, there's no existing squad, no fan base, no history to inherit. Everything gets built from the first training session.
